Beginner's Guide to YGO Omega

This beginner's guide takes you from a fresh download to your first tournament on YGO Omega, the free Yu-Gi-Oh! simulator built by Duelists Unite. You don't need to own a single card: every card is unlocked from the first launch, and there is no currency, crafting or pack to open.

The steps follow the order most new players go in. Install the client, build a deck in the browser, pick how you want to duel, then move on to ranked and tournaments once the basics feel easy.

Download and install the client

Get the launcher from the download page. There are builds for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, and the install takes under two minutes. Omega doesn't run in a browser: duels happen in the client, while the site handles decks, tournaments, rankings and this wiki.

The launcher keeps the client up to date. Let it finish updating before you duel, since new cards and script fixes arrive through those updates.

To save decks and register for tournaments on the site, sign in with your Discord account.

Build your first deck

Open the Deck Builder. It searches the whole card pool, filters by attribute, level, type, archetype and banlist status, and flags anything that would make the deck illegal in the format you picked. Save the list, share the link if you like, and load it into Omega.

The rules for a TCG deck:

  • Main Deck: 40 to 60 cards.

Album covers, artwork and songs belong to their artists and labels. We show them under fair use and claim no rights to them.

  • Extra Deck: up to 15 cards.
  • Side Deck: up to 15 cards, swapped in between games of a match.
  • Copies: at most 3 of any card across all three, fewer if the banlist says so.
  • Not sure where to start? Copy a list from public decks, or open statistics to see which decks are winning in ranked this season and build one of those.

    Start at 40 cards

Every card past 40 makes your best card a little less likely to show up in your opening hand. Most competitive decks run exactly 40 Main Deck cards.

    Read the banlist

A banlist caps how many copies of a card you can play: Forbidden cards can't be played at all, Limited cards at 1 copy and Semi-Limited cards at 2. The Deck Builder shows each card's status on the list you picked, and the banlist timeline shows every change since the game began.

Genesys works differently. Instead of copy limits, every card costs points and the whole deck has to stay at or under 100. The Format Primer explains how that works.

    Choose automatic or manual duels

Omega runs both modes in the same client, so you never need a second install.

Automatic is the usual way to play. The engine tracks Life Points, chains, timing windows and priority. You choose your plays, and the core resolves them the way the official rulings say for the format you picked. Ranked and automatic tournaments run in this mode.

Manual works like a physical table: you move the cards yourself and keep track of the game together with your opponent. A single Move button handles most actions, and chat commands cover the rest; type /help to list them. Custom cards and custom banlists work here too, which makes manual the place to test house rules or practise for a paper tournament.

    Play your first duels

A duel in progress on the YGO Omega client at turn 2, both players on 8000 Life Points
A duel in automatic mode: the engine tracks Life Points, zones and the turn counter for both players.©2020 Studio Dice/SHUEISHA, TV TOKYO, KONAMI

Play a few casual duels before you queue for ranked. Losing them costs nothing, and you learn your deck's openings faster against real hands than by reading the list.

When you're ready, Omega has two ranked ladders: TCG and Genesys. Each has its own seasons, its own leaderboard and an Elo rating that rises when you win and drops when you lose. Ranked matches are best of three with Side Decks, so one bad opening hand doesn't decide the match on its own.

    Using your Side Deck

After each game of a match you can swap cards between your Side Deck and your Main or Extra Deck. The Main Deck still has to stay between 40 and 60 cards, and the Extra Deck at 15 or fewer. Players usually bring in answers to whatever beat them and take out the cards that did nothing in that matchup.

    Enter your first tournament

Omega runs automatic Swiss tournaments. Find one on the tournaments page or the calendar, or get alerted in client then click on the trophy icon and register with a deck, and the engine handles the rest:

    1. Every decklist is checked against the format's banlist before round one.
    2. Each round pairs players with similar records.
    3. The engine reports every game, so nobody hands in a result slip or disputes a score.
    4. Standings update after each round.

Rotating tournaments open on the calendar by themselves, entry is free and the results count toward your Elo. The Duelists Unite Discord also hosts weekly tournaments with prizes, and new events show up there first.

Your deck locks at round one

Once the tournament starts, your list can't change until it ends. You can still side between games of a match, but only with the Side Deck you registered.

    Common questions

    Is YGO Omega free?+

Yes. Every card is unlocked, ranked play is open and tournaments cost nothing to enter. There is no currency, no crafting and no packs.

Does Omega run in a browser?+

No. You duel in the client, which installs through the launcher on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. The site runs the Deck Builder, tournaments, rankings and this wiki.

Which rulings does Omega follow, TCG or OCG?+

Both. Pick a format and you get that format's rulings. When a card's TCG and OCG texts disagree, Omega scripts it twice. The Format Primer has an example.

Can I play against an Bot or AI?+

Yes, you can! When hosting a room to play, you can select a variety of Decks the bot can use and to add as your enemy or even as a partner in a Tag Duel, just click on "Add Bot".

How soon are new cards playable?+

Usually between three hours and a week after release, depending on when a scripter is free to write the card.

    What does VIP give me?+

Donate at least 5 USD and you get one of each rarity, and your mat and sleeves become visible to your opponents. The donation link is on the download page.
